B. A. Management in International Business

Welcome to International Business Management

You want to study – but which degree should you choose? Well, that probably depends on what you want to do afterwards.

Do you want to work overseas or perhaps work for a German company that operates internationally? Would you like to become really fluent in English, maybe because you eventually want to study for a Master’s degree that is taught in English?

Our English track B. A. in Management in International Business will help you realise your dreams, teaching you recognised management techniques as well as essential intercultural skills.

The programme in brief

Tuition fees:
590 Euros per month

6 semesters, during which time you will develop important skills and gain valuable experience

Bachelor of Arts

Start of the program:
Winter- and Summer Semester

Semester Schedule:
Winter Semester: October 1st– March 31st
Including semester breaks over Christmas/New Year and from mid-February to end of March
Summer Semester: April 1st –September 30th
Semester break from mid-July to end of September

Formal entrance requirements:
You must either have the German "Fachhochschulreife" or its equivalent, e.g. qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate or the English "A" levels. As a rule, this requires the successful completion of 12 - 13 years of school education in your home country. Applicants from some countries also need to have begun or even completed further studies. As the degree is taught in English, you need to have reached level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference) in English.

Practical orientation:
All of our Professors have extensive business experience. Guest lectures from our partner companies. Teaching includes “Harvard style” international business case studies.
An 18-week internship is part of the curriculum. More practical experience can be gained during the semester or the semester breaks, e.g. as a working student.

What do we require from applicants?

The ideal candidate is interested in learning modern management skills and how to use them in international business. He or she wants to learn about other cultures and to take existing English skills to a higher level by studying in English.

You should also have good social and communication skills and a sense of responsibility. In addition to these attributes, if you can work in an organised and disciplined manner, even when things get stressful, then you have the makings of a successful international manager, and we should talk!

What subjects will I study?

Does the study programme have the option of a 2nd degree?

To make your bachelor’s degree truly international, the BA Management in International Business offers the option to obtain a second degree in Business Administration. In cooperation with the Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK) in Finland, students can spend two semesters at our partner university and earn the necessary extra credits for the second bachelor’s degree.

How can I apply?

Applicants residing in Germany

Studying management requires more from an applicant than just the necessary school leaving certificates. It takes special characteristics, such as motivation and personality, to be successful in the field.

The process starts with an online application, after which you will be invited to attend an applicants’ day, here in Mannheim. The assessment includes a computer based e-profiling test (which allows us to evaluate your potential) and a personal interview with the Head of the Department. The results help us to determine how well you match the MIB degree programme or whether you should consider a different option.

You will be informed about the result of your application shortly after the assessment, giving you enough time to prepare for your life as a student.

If you have not yet received your school-leaving certificates, please apply with the most up-to-date transcript or report you have.

For the application process, we charge a fee of 50 Euro. If your application results in enrollment and a legally binding contract between you and the HdWM, the fee of 50 Euro will be deducted from the enrolment fee. You will receive a short summary of your test results.

Online Application

If you want to study Management in International Business, you can submit your binding application via our online application tool. There, you can enter your personal data. The system will guide you step by step through the application process. Until the submission of your online application, you can return anytime and make changes. You do not have to complete it in one session. For the application at HdWM, we need the following application documents:

  • Current CV
  • Photo as JPEG file
  • Motivation letter in English of max. 1 page. Let us know: Why are you interested in this specific study programme and what are your career aims? Which qualifictaions do you already have?
  • Certificates or interim reports must be notarised. You can send them as scans. Please bring them as notarised copies in paper to the application day.
  • A scanned copy of your ID card or passport
  • Language certificates about your English skills on B2 level (for non-native speakers of English). All common language tests are accepted. A German Abitur is also sufficient proof of your language skills.

You can sign in and send your application documents to bewerbung@hdwm.org until 5 days prior to the respective application day. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Applicants from outside of Germany

If you apply from outside of Germany, please send us all your relevant school and language certificates to enable us to check your university entrance qualifications. Please send them via email (2MB file size max.) to bewerbung@hdwm.org. If you are unable to attend an applicants’ day, one of the MIB professors will conduct the interview via Skype.

Why are the tuition fees so low?

The tuition fees at the University of Applied Management Studies (UAMS, or HdWM in German) are moderate, thanks to subsidies by our partner companies. This enables us to keep the tuition fees affordable. Usually, the programme, with its small groups and a family atmosphere, would cost about 800€ Euros per month.

Our unique subsidised programme allows us to charge affordable tuition fees of 590 Euros per month. This equals a monthly discount or scholarship of 210 Euros, which you don't have to pay back after graduation. Students from outside of the EU must pay the tuition fees for the first semester in advance.

Active support by our Career Service

From the first semester on, our Career Service team is there to help you plan your career. Apart from active career counselling and optimising your application documents, the contact to our partner companies is our main task. We offer a great number of events, case studies, and projects to get you in touch with the companies.

In addition to our subsidised tuition fees, several other means of funding your tuition fees are available. Germans can apply for BAföG and the KfW student loan. Under certain circumstances, these options are also available to non-Germans (please check their websites for further details). We also offer the “Deutschlandstipendium”, a merit-based scholarship for which all nationalities can apply.

Costs of the Management in International Business programme

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for Management in International Business are 590 Euros per month. Students coming from outside Germany will be required to pay for the first semester in advance - i.e. prior to enrolment.

As this is an English track programme, no knowledge of German is required, however if you speak and write German fluently (European Common Framework Reference B2) then this will be an advantage to you in finding an internship place - which you have to do for your fourth semester. Also, it will help you to find a position as a working student at one of our partner companies’, where you can work during the semester or in the semester break to fund your studies.

Other fees

There is a non-refundable application fee of 110€, payable at the time of the application. This fee is set off with the one-time enrolment fee of 390€ that you pay if you are accepted and choose to join the programme. For the thesis, there is a fee of 390€. You also have to pay a so-called Solidarity Contribution of 24.50€ per semester.

Living expenses

Living expenses vary from person to person, according to your lifestyle and whether you wish to rent your own flat or share a flat with other students. Health Insurance is compulsory and for a young and healthy student is available from between 30€ to 75€ per month.

Most students buy a semester ticket from the local public transport company. This costs 170€ per semester but you then have free travel on all buses, trams and local trains in the region. For books you should reckon with 300€ to 400€ per semester.
